Safety Instructions for the Crazyflie Nano Quadcopter

Even though the Crazyflie is just a small quadcopter it can still do damage in a number of different ways. Therefore it's important to operate it in a responsible way making sure that safety comes first. The hardware is still in a prototype/experimental state and the firmware/software is still unstable and undergoing changes by both us as well as the community. This means that the Crazyflie will sometimes behave very unexpectedly and this might cause problems.

The Crazyflie is NOT a toy and should be operated responsibly. Use common sense and take the proper precautions.

The safety of people should have your highest priority! Keep a safe distance between your Crazyflie and living objects!

Flying

  • Crashes can happen because of hardware, software or pilot errors/malfunction.
  • Before and during flight make sure that you have enough room and that no one that can be hurt is close to the Crazyflie (this includes children, adults and pets).
  • Turn on the transmitter/controller and ensure that the throttle part is set to zero before connecting. Check this also on the PC Client.
  • While flying check that no delicate objects are in reach of the Crazyflie as it might damage them.
  • Keep a minimum of 1 meter distance between you and your copter.
  • If spectators/people are in the flying area, make sure to land safely and wait until the left this area to avoid damage/injuries.
  • The Crazyflie can exceed a high speed when flying at full power and can ascend up to 50m. This can be dangerous if the battery is running out.
  • As the red light is steady, fly back to your start location or land safely to prevent damage.
  • The software allows the user to configure settings that might make the Crazyflie behave very unexpectedly so take care when changing these settings.
  • Avoid sudden or extreme control stick changes. Only do this when you have enough flying experience to handle fast changes.
  • You can loose orientation very fast because the quadcopter is symmetrical. Tip: Attach a colored tape to M1 when using + flying mode.
  • If you loose orientation, simply descend and land instead of a orientation-induced crash or a fly away.

Storing

  • While storing the Crazyflie make sure that it's not stored in direct sunlight and that it's kept out of reach of children and pets.
  • Avoid high temperature / humid locations.
  • Store your Crazyflie in a small box to prevent unwanted crashes/falls.
  • Load your battery fully before storing. This should be especially done when you are not using your Crazyflie a couple of days.

Battery

  • Do not puncture the battery or leave it in the sunlight and make sure that it's kept out of reach of children and pets.
  • LiPo's can be very dangerous, make sure that the do not get over- or underloaded.
  • Never put the PLUS+ and MINUS- together! Attention when changing the battery connector.
